Tippi in Hawaii

I received my Tippi fingertips. Mahalo Nui Loa. Thank you very much. Glad it came when it did. I forgot to bring home the one I use the most # 5 and now that I have the #5s I can take one to my part time job and leave it there.

I took a picture of the Tippi Fingertip Friends. There is one wannabe, can you guess who? That is what I've been using all this time. What a difference a Tippi makes, Thought you'd get a smile out of it.

Thanks Kathy.

Finger Prophylactics from Trendhunters Magazine

Trendhunter Magazine posted the following entry:

No more icky rubber fingers tips that you have no idea where they’ve been. Tippi gel grips are comfortable, ergonomic and breathable. They improve hand dexterity, with their Friction Ridges to help you sort, shuffle, and collate papers easily. The open design and flexible material feel better and you can clean them with mild soap and water. Best money you will ever spend on rubbers.

Effect of grip span on lateral pinch grip strength

Fron the Introduction in a Journal article by Carrie L. Shivers, Gary A. Mirka, David B. Kaber; Human Factors, Vol. 44, 2002:

Repetitive, awkward, high-force pinch grip exertions have been related to fatigue, discomfort, and injury to the hand/wrist complex in industrial populations. In a study of sewing machine operators, T. J. Armstrong and Chaffin (1979) showed that operators with a history of carpal tunnel syndrome used pinch grips more frequently and that the force used during these pinch grip exertions was greater than that employed by the control group (women performing the same jobs at the time that the case group members reported their symptoms). The effects of pinch grip exertions on the intrinsic muscles of the hand were considered by Punnett and Keyserling (1987) in a study of employees in a garment shop. They found a positive correlation between pinch grip duration and hand pain in this population.

I like the idea of the giant holes on top for the knuckles and fingernails.

Benny posted at the gadgets.boing.boing entry:

I like the idea of the giant holes on top for the knuckles and fingernails. The old rubber fingers are nice, but they tend to cause my fingers to sweat due to complete insulation, and then they'd slip off my fingers because of all the liquid stored inside.

And for someone that works with giant files and have to scan them quickly, the finger grip/moistening gels just isn't a viable option.

I'm gonna stop by office max and check this out, now I can be fashionably trendy and efficient, score!

Thanks for the feedback Benny.

Research with W.S.U.

It's worth noting that I worked with researchers at the College of Engineering & Architecture at Washington State University to develop the product. Check out the Get a Grip! write up in WSU Today.

The research was funded by a grant from Washington Technology Center. Here's a link to WTC's 2007 annual report listing the project.

Stop licking your finger

From Reader's Digest Extraordinary uses for rubber bands:

Thumb through papers with ease

Stop licking your finger. Just wrap a rubber band around your index finger a few times the next time you need to shuffle papers. Not too tight, though! You don't want to cut off circulation to your fingertip.

Dedos de goma

From Madrid, Spain -

Piensa también en cuando lees y debes dar vuelta la hoja. ¿Qué haces? ¿Qué hacen? Sí, es verdad, muchas veces pasan la lengua por sus dedos, algo poco higiénico por cierto...

Licking a finger to help turning a page, from Wikipedia

Wikipedia has an entry for Licking and a section called Licking in humans.

A habit of many people is licking a finger to help turning a page, getting grip on a sheet of paper from the top of a pile or opening a plastic bag. This is often considered unhygienic and it is questioned whether there really is any necessity to do so although the people who do it claim that, for example, in certain situations turning a page is difficult and that it goes much easier after licking the top of the finger used to turn that page.

Thank you for the WONDERFUL product!  They are SO much better than the rubber finger tips.  I have to do a lot of filing and searching through files – the thick rubber fingertips were cumbersome and unwieldy. I am VERY happy with my new tippi micro gel grips!

Rubber Finger Tips?

Here's a great story from Emily Anne Esptein about her discovery of rubber finger tips at her friends office.

... EW! What is this?”

What I thought was a key turns out to be a rubber fingertip.  Tanya explains,  “it’s for when you are turning pages and don’t want to get paper cuts or lick your finger.

Show of some love

This came via email a while back, but I thought it was worth sharing here today.

I just received my Tippi samples.  LOVE THEM.  Shared them with several people in my dept. and they all liked them.  The only critique I can give you is to make the rubber just a little stronger.  This is the type of fingertip you put on in the morning and don't take off until your work day is done.  It's kind of difficult to get the tip on your finger.  Forgive me for being so personal but it's kind of like putting a condom on in that sometimes it takes a bit of adjustment to get the fit right but once you are done with your Tippi for the day, it rolls off easily.

I am going to forward one of the Tippi's to my person in Procurement, I hope they love it as much as I do.

Best of luck on this product.  I personally think this is a great "about time" product.  The other finger tips, as you know, make you sweat so this is such a better product that you can keep on all day.  You should send some samples to the Oprah Winfrey Show.  If she shows it on her show, no worries about the future financial condition of Tippi, you will be swamped with orders.

Thank you so much for the samples.  I look forward to being able to purchase your product in the future at my local office supply store.

Ballot counting

Washington state just had it's primary election and I observed the poll workers sort and collate the official ballots. Though machines do the tabulating, the whole process is still paper-handling labor intensive.

There were a lot of nitrile gloves and a lot of rubber fingers being used. We hope to get Tippi grips used during the presidential election count this November.

An occupational health nurse found Tippi on the web a while back and asked to buy some for a worker who developed skin irritations to latex. I sent them free samples. Lucy writes today in response to my email letting her know that the product is now available in OfficeMax.

Thank you so much for the info - they have been a wonderful product.

What makes Tippi ergonomic?

What makes Tippi ergonomic lies not only in the product's ergonomic design and material but also in the measurable results that quantifies real ergonomic benefits.

This article in Design News, Feb. 7, 2000 by Goran Pesevski and Eugene Ylo answers the question What does ergonomic design really mean?  To quantify or to measure the ergonomics of the Tippi product, we conducted paper handling experiments on 10 test subjects and compared the pinch grip performance of the dominant hand with bare fingers versus with the Tippi product. Here's a video of an experiment put side-by-side to show elapsed time and the number of times the fingers fumbled.

On the left, labeled Fingers, is the experiment performed with bare fingers while, on the right, With Tippi, is the same experiment performed with the Tippi grips on the pinch grip--the thumb, index finger, and middle finger.

Time is measured in minutes, seconds and hundredths of seconds. Fumbles are the number of times the paper completely slips off from the pinch grip picking up the test material.

This particluar experiment measured an 83% reduction in the number of fumbles resulting in an 18% reduction in time it took to perform the experiment.

Overall results, testing 10 subjects performing 3 different paper handling experiments, was an average of 74% reduction in wasted effort and an average of 15% increase in productivity.

Less fumbles mean less wasted effort that contributes to unnecessary muscle strain in a repetitive activity. A dramatic reduction in wasted effort leading to a jump in productivity is a measurable ergonomic benefit.

I loved the samples.  Where can I purchase them?

How come people lick their finger?

Here's a what Ed Rochelle writes about how come...

Well licked airline magazine

On the plane ride home, a lady beside me licked her finger to turn each page of the Alaska Airline magazine in her seat pocket. I could only wish that I had a Tippi grip to give her to use. Here's what another blogger thinks about finger licking pageturners. Here's a rant about finger licking bad.

OfficeMax Meeting

I flew in to Chicago yesterday for a meeting with the category manager for retail. It was snowing and cold. But it was good to hear that Tippi will be rolling out in OfficeMax stores in a few months.

Website Re-design

Today we launch the new Tippi Micro Gel Grip website. The re-design coincides with the roll-out of the Tippi grips in OfficeMax and the Reliable Office Supplies catalog and on-line website. It's been a long time coming to get to this point where we are now shipping product. And now that we are shipping, I have decided to use this blog to tell our story.
